A spatial vision for the city of Edinburgh that proposes a strategic re-location of the creative industries to the periphery of the city region, i.e. to the neighbourhoods on the inside edge of the city’s ring road and to the neighbourhoods adjacent to the city’s waterfront and coastal edge. Also included in the strategy are the areas of north and south Queensferry.
It is hoped that by giving the creative industries a locality in the city that can then be recognised as such, it will stimulate both inward investment to these areas and thus make the periphery feel valued as an integral part of the city’s economic, social and cultural identity.
By targeting the periphery of the city, where job prospects, and therefore income levels, are lower than the core and outer suburbs of the city, it is hoped that entrepreneurial creative start ups and established creative industries will provide a long term economic stimulus.
The periphery has been identified as ideal for these types of industries that typically seek low cost overheads for studio and manufacturing spaces, and a ready, willing, educated labour force seeking skills and self determination.
